Students in CAS1020 look at pollution as a global problem that starts with local practices and infrastructure. Using the “three Inters” – interdisciplinary reasoning, interconnected systems thinking, and intercultural comparison, they look at how waste flows from local gutters to multinational treaties, and question the idea of borderless citizenship. Weekly lectures, reflection assignments, rotating student presentations, and a video documentary project that focuses on the community compel each student to contemplate how they can make a big difference while also being accountable to the communities around the university.
